Certificate of Marriage

Both parties to the marriage sign the license with their current (pre-marriage or "maiden") name. Once the marriage license has been registered with Service Ontario, the couple must obtain their official Certificate of Marriage.  That is the document needed to change documents such as driver's licenses. The marriage does NOT constitute a Legal Name Change.

 Legal Name Change

When you get married, you don’t have to legally change your last name (surname). But if you choose to legally change your last name, you can do so through ServiceOntario.
